Features of mineral nutrition of corn
Corn is one of the most productive cultures of modern agriculture. To form the vegetative mass and grain, it requires a large amount of nutrients. High demand for microelements - nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium. Among the microelements, boron, zinc, iron, and copper are the most important. Especially sensitive to zinc deficiency in early growth stages. The negative effect of zinc deficiency cannot be corrected by adding it in later growth stages of plants. Zinc enters many enzymes and promotes improved metabolic processes in the plant. Iron increases the efficiency of redox reactions and photosynthesis. Boron and copper improve flowering and pollination and prevent the manifestation of through-wintering, ensuring full filling of ears.
In the mineral nutrition of corn, two critical periods are clearly distinguished:
- First - in the phase of 3-5 leaves, when active growth of the secondary root system begins and nutrient uptake from the soil starts, the formation of generative organs begins. To obtain the necessary nutrients from fertilizers applied before sowing, young corn plants are still unable to absorb them due to insufficiently developed root system or unfavorable weather conditions (drought, late frosts), manifestation of ion antagonism. Therefore, it is very important to compensate for the lack of elements in this period, especially zinc, by foliar fertilization. Delaying correction of plant nutrition with zinc significantly reduces the effectiveness of fertilization with it.
- Second - before the beginning of the rapid growth phase, which begins with the formation of 8-10 leaves and lasts until the beginning of panicle emergence. Foliar fertilization in this period eliminates stress in plants from the action of phytotoxic herbicides and stimulates vegetative growth of plants. In this period, effective will be fertilization with a complex special fertilizer in full dose.
