Features of mineral nutrition of legume crops
Legume crops in the grain have a significantly higher protein content than cereal crops. Another important feature of this group of crops is the ability to fix nitrogen from the air in symbiosis with rhizobia. These features determine the high requirements of legume crops for the provision of elements of mineral nutrition. Among the macronutrients, these are phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sulfur. The question of adding nitrogen to the sowing and at early stages is debatable. Under cold and rainy weather, legume crops require nitrogen application. A sign indicating the need for plants in nitrogen is a small number of nodules on the roots - up to 5, and they are gray in color in a cut section. Among the micronutrients, the most in demand are molybdenum, boron, zinc, manganese.
The most critical periods of mineral nutrition of legumes are: the phase of formation of 2 true leaves (beginning of nitrogen fixation), the phase of budding (laying and development of flowers), the beginning of pod formation (intensive accumulation of dry matter).
The phase of two true leaves is the beginning of nitrogen-fixing activity of rhizobia and critically important in this period is the provision of plants with molybdenum. Molybdenum participates in transformations of oxidized forms of nitrogen bound by rhizobia into reduced for inclusion in the synthesis of azotoporous compounds of higher order: amines, amino acids, proteins.
Legume crops are sensitive to boron deficiency, the role of which in this case is to improve pollination of flowers, so it is essential to provide plants with available forms of boron at the beginning of the budding phase. At the same time, there is an intensive increase in the vegetative mass of plants, the formation of the leaf surface, which requires comprehensive provision of plants with basic and macronutrients and micronutrients.
